Gifts of Jeanne SCHNEGG |
Beginning
in 1984, Gaston Schnegg's daughter, Jeanne Schnegg,
has made important donations to the Art Museum of Bordeaux (France)
including more than two hundred
works of her father's : sculptures, drawings and
paintings. She has contributed as well many documents and
several sculptures of her uncle Lucien Schnegg.
These offerings are all indexed in the catalogue of
the splendid exhibition the museum organised in January
and February of 1986. J. Schnegg also donated
several works to the
Despiau-Wlérick
Sculpture Museum of Mont-de-Marsan*,
in memory of the "Bande à Schnegg", a
group of sculptors inspired and led by Gaston's
brother, Lucien Schnegg. Both Despiau
and Wlérick were members of this group. At that time, the city of Bordeaux fancied to create a large Art Museum in the old Gare d'Orléans (something like the Orsay Museum in Paris) and to dedicate a permanent room to Gaston Schnegg in it. But by the time this project vanished and this failure drove Jeanne to despair. She died in 1994 without seeing the achievement of this beautiful dream... Now, seventeen movie rooms, a conference room and several restaurants have taken place in this former railwaystation ! A lost dream |

Charles Despiau and Robert Wlérick were
born in Mont-de-Marsan, a town to the south of Bordeaux, where a beautiful sculpture museum has been dedicated to them. They also worked for Rodin. |
